District Conference is set for 31st March next year, to be held nearby in Whakatane. President Wayne is going and is keen for a contingent of fellow club members to keep him company.

Speakers Dan Allen-Gordon gave us a little run down of Kiwi Can activities. The club has now been supporting Kiwi can for 7 years and is committed to another 2. Dan tells us the programme is about building capacity, relationships and engagement in youngsters, and was quite boastful about its effectiveness.

Dean Thompson, of the Investment Committee took over with the background to the latest property development project the club has entered into. Sold the house off the plans no less, with the club making a handsome dividend. Many thanks to Rowesdale Developments and Generation Homes for their generosity. Dean also told us about Bernie and Alison Rowe (of Rowesdale Developments) - how their family had swelled from 4 to 7 and then to 9, how the local vicar was co-opted to help fold the nappies, and how solace can often be found in a bottle of gin. Children, farming, kiwifruit and export orchids and property development was accompanied by marriage celebrant, JP, Grief Councillor, Golf Club Captain, Swimming Coach and TBC rowing – scribe was getting writer’s cramp by this stage….

President Wayne then presented Alison with a well deserved Paul Harris Fellowship.

Hope and Jordon from Mt Maunganui Intermediate then passed on their Kiwi Canner’s thanks which was followed by an exchange of lollies.

The Raffle was duly drawn with Barry Vercoe the victor on this occasion.

Sergeant: More from Eric, this time about pairs of sox and needing rescuing after crashing the lawnmower into his fence. I wonder if they ever let him drive those tanks?

Parting Thought from Andrew Knowles:

Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.
