Today in History    15th March 1944

On 15 March 1944, 6 New Zealand Brigade attacked the Italian town of Cassino as part of the Allies’ advance on Rome.

This was one of four Allied assaults on the German defences at Cassino between January and May 1944. 2 New Zealand Division played a significant part in this campaign. By the time it was withdrawn in early April, 343 New Zealanders had lost their lives.

The success of the 15 March attack on the tactically important Castle Hill depended on the effectiveness of a prior bombing campaign. Troops had been waiting three weeks in freezing rain for suitable weather for an aerial assault. Bombarded from air and land, Cassino was reduced to rubble.

  2. Next year – beginning 1 July we have a new Secretary – Kathy Webb – a woman with much experience (in this type of work, and who knows what else?
  3. Jim stated that there are some members who are not paying their dues. He then gave us very boring details of what, why, how, when. But the shortened version is that he will write to all who need to pay up more often or just more. Our club needs to be able to pay its dues.
  4. Remember if you are not coming to breakfast you MUST email via the website by 6pm on Thursday prior.
  5. TECT Community Award nominations – awards will be allocated on Thursday 21 March. Taking Back Our Beach Rosalie’s film for the Sustainable Future Award and Bryan Winters for the Volunteer of the Year Award – Let’s hope that their efforts are rewarded.

The Western Bay Community Awards are returning to Baycourt on Thursday, 21 March 2024!

The Western Bay Community Awards bring together all those who are involved in the Western Bay's community and volunteer sector; to celebrate and acknowledge their incredible community work that is helping make the Western Bay of Plenty one of the greatest places to live.

  1. The Great K Valley Cycle Adventure – more teams needed. We now have a bike to give away and much work behind the scenes is being done. But we must push this out. More posters needed – if you are on FB or LinkedIn please share the event. Currently we only have 11 teams and 5 weeks to go. Sell! Sell! Sell!
  2. Katikati club barbeque on 19th March at Te Puna Quarry Park $25 her head
  3. Red Cross street collectors needed for next Friday – please help – it’s a great way to meet new people.

FYI: The world is green – Indeever took up the cause and  spoke a lot of  about rubbish. And the benefits of plastic in roading material instead of bitumen. Makes good sense to me.

Guest Speaker –   Our very own Bob Sutton.

Sadly Bob is leaving us to go back to his family in the UK – was a large family – now the magnificent 7. He told us the sad story of his recent life in NZ – it really hasn’t been what he had hoped for. He told us a bit about his background in the banking industry and his reasons for moving to NZ. However then we talked about some great things that he has achieved. Bob was a founding member of Sunrise Rotary. Bob’s Barbeque has been a huge success over the years – a family friendly opportunity to meet with friends and enjoy a relaxed afternoon – although it sounds like shenanigans after hours were not uncommon. His 27 years in Sunrise Rotary have made a huge difference to his life. He has made many great friends he knows he can count on. In his opinion, Rotary opens doors and allows you to get to know your community He paid special tribute to Sally Morrison’s trip to Vietnam. He has (or maybe not quite) a 2 bedroom unit with a garden 12 miles from London – planning on doing some volunteering alongside his family connections.
Bye Bob – we will miss your unique witty style. Great that we  can stay at yours in London – thank goodness you have a spare bedroom for us.

Sergeant at Arms – Ian Burns arrived with his 1929 ledger  under his arm. He fascinated us with his memories of being a bank clerk in his first job (when was that Ian – maybe 1960’s?) People could write in those days and Xero hadnt been invented. Gun laws were much more permissive as his young accomplice on his way to doing a bank transfer to the Reserve bank, was armed with a revolver in his pocket.
