   Editors note
This week we have a double issue out due to missing run time while away in Japan  with the team.

The first part is covering the meeting of   22nd March 2024 by Steve Dorrington   and the second part is the meeting of 5th April by Rhonda Wisbey.
As of this coming week we are back to normal editions

 22nd March

Visitors:   Arshdeep Singh, Janaya Puahotaua.
Welcome–from President Elect Indeevar Duhan

FYI: Sustainability Talk Rosalie gave us a wee insight into the use of giant plastic animals, which can be used to adorn your home and are used to signal whether or not you are home or out to lunch. The Cracking Art Group are responsible for these giant animals made of recyclable and coloured plastic. A bit of a step up from a butterfly by your front door. Didn’t see any cats, plastic or otherwise on Gareth’s house either.

Guest Speaker – Relatively new member Ray Freeman gave us some background into his new startup business PROTECH (protechsolutions.org.nz),
providing integrated security solutions for local businesses. Ray spent 30 years in Australian security, but it all started outside the Governor’s Tavern in Hamilton. Ray is a former professional boxer and kick boxer which may have given him an unfair advantage on the door at the Governor’s should any form of disagreement arise.
Ray spent time in disaster management, loss prevention and facility services and has a track record of being the “goto” man in event of any untoward events.
His new startup is looking at a new operating system including digital reporting – he is very keen on establishing a local client base if you have any leads for him.
We wish him well.

Notices & Announcements
President Elect – Simon advises that no further nominations have been received, so Shiv Thamalla will be our new President Elect. This will be ratified at the next Board Meeting, Well done that man!

Volunteer of the Year – Brian Winters won this award at the Western ay Community Awards ceremony – https://www.sunlive.co.nz/news/339563-awards-evening-showcases-hardworking-community-.html

Jane Nees – Mary O’Sullivan advises that Jane’s mother recently passed away (100+, well done that woman!). Our thoughts are with Jane and family.

RYPENS -   Thanks to all involved in last weekend. Especially to Chris Dever, who from all accounts held it all together. 34 students attended, and numerous messages of positive feedback were received.

Rotary Conference  17th -19th May at Cambridge. Looks like the club will muster a good turnout this year. Get amongst it if you can. Email: info@9930conference.co.nz

New Member – Arshdepp Singh, proposed by Indeevar, was born in Punjab in 1999 and came to New Zealand to qualify as a pharmacy technician (Christchurch) in 2020. He currently works at Arvida, Bethlehem Views (aged care) as a wellness partner. His interests include sport and dancing.

Raffle: The vino was initially won by no one at all, as the winning ticket was left at the check in desk. A redraw saw Wayne Shadbolt enjoy the spoils.

Sergeant at Arms – Dave McDonald should have been able to avoid being Sergeant, but clearly failed. He gave us a little background in how things are run elsewhere (Ellerslie Sunrise), and possibly how they will be run come the revolution. Although there was no money, there were fines for doing things well, doing things badly, and some for not doing them at all. After all that fails, you should always have a catch-all fine, for those who might have missed out. Then, finally a joke, of sorts. A bit like motoring with Robbie. Very effective. It’s a pity no one had any cash.

Welcome–from President Indeevar in charge in Michele’s absence.  Welcomed all to our meeting.

FYI :       None today

Guest Speaker –  Errol Brain – The Drug Detection Agency. TDDA
As a returning speaker to our Club Errol again provided us with an interesting summary of what’s up in the workplace and our community with Drugs. Errol again reminded us that all workplaces should have an effective Drug and Alcohol policy as these substances are known hazards in any place of employment. Failure to do so could result in a WorkSafe prosecution if harm is caused in your workplace.

TDDA in the last year conducted 450,000 drug and alcohol tests or which 70,000 were positive. That is a 15% failure rate.  Of those failed tests 30% were positive for Methamphetamine. That is nearly 5% of all tested employees were meth users.  Quite a horrifying statistic.  They have also seen a big increase in the proportion of positive tests for Cocaine. This is becoming a popular recreational drug in NZ and the price is reducing as the supply to NZ increases. Just last week another 50kg or Cocaine was stopped at the port of Tauranga.

An employee under the influence of Drugs or Alcohol is
4x more likely to be in an accident.
15 x more likely to be absent from work.
50% less productive
And
1 in 5 workplace deaths are attributable or partially attributable to Drugs and alcohol.

The message

Front foot Drugs and Alcohol in the workplace by implementing an effective Drug and Alcohol Policy.
Know your staff
Drugs and Alcohol in the workplace is HAZARD.
Eliminate, and or mitigate the hazard.

Those in the room with strong left sided brains saw the answer straightaway. The more creative among us provided alternative answers.
The interesting fact is.
Your iPhone calculator correctly provides the answer as 150 – go apple.
Your desk calculator provides and incorrect answer of 200
