Today in History    02 February 1974

The men’s 1500-m final was run on the last day of the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games. Tanzanian Filbert Bayi ran the first 800 m in an astonishing 1 minute 52.2 seconds, conserved energy on the third lap, and held off 22-year-old New Zealander John Walker to set a new world record of 3:32.16. Walker also broke Jim Ryun’s world record.

The third, fourth and fifth placegetters ran the fourth, fifth and seventh fastest 1500-m times to that date. Five national records were broken.

Bayi and Walker continued their rivalry in 1975. On 17 May, Bayi broke Ryun’s eight-year-old world mark for the mile, clocking 3:51.0. This record was short-lived, as Walker became history’s first sub-3:50 miler on 12 August, running 3:49.4 at Göteborg, Sweden.

Visitors:   Unusually, there were no visitors today

Welcome–from President …… President Michele Beaton welcomed all members to todays meeting.

FYI: (A popular Green slot…as much or a little detail as required))

Stephen Dorrington spoke to us for the 2 minute ‘green’ slot.      Stephen has been riding his bike to work and the diligent analyst that he is, could not stop himself from counting cars.  In particular, the number of cars that have a single passenger, the driver.

His record so far is to have counted 35 consecutive cars with a single person aboard.
Steve’s request was that whilst he is riding to work (7:30 to 8:30), please try to have more than one person in your vehicle.

He completed this in 2 minute 40 seconds.

Guest Speaker –  Simon Beaton

Today we had our own Simon Beaton as the guest speaker.  His topic was ‘History leading up to the treaty of Waitangi’.     I though that this was a particularly brave move, as we were in the company of Buddy, who was formally on the Waitangi Tribunal.

With the usual panache that we have come to expect from Simon, we are treated to a history lesson that would have made his history professors proud.

Simon left us with a point to ponder:

“What would have happened if Ngā Puhi had not signed the Treaty on the 6th February 1840?”

Simon and Buddy were observed in friendly conversation at the end of the meeting so one can assume they were in rough agreement.
