Announcements:
GLENN once more promoted the Carrus Crystal Palace breakfast. Tickets are now available and we only have to sell 2 each. Club members get the tickets at a $15 discount with a rebate from your meal charge so only $30. Hmmm. Some creative accounting there. Clever. Be there.
PAT also did a promotion – this time for Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (henceforth GWCTD)4 and/or 11 November are the dates
BARBARA appealed for more collectors – this time for the Blind Society next week. Good to get feedback from the Cancer Society where we collected $730 in Red Square.
KEN was in attendance so it must be Friday Fives tonight (or was if you get this tomorrow)
Speakers
No less than 3 speakers today, all amazing in their different ways. First up was 11 year old Cole Jackson, a young man confident way beyond his years. Cole received the Award of Excellence from Kiwi Can and gave an eloquent résumé of just how much Kiwi Can has helped him become more confident. Great stuff.
Next up was Jess Collins with a heart-rending account of her formative years which were littered with alcohol, drugs, depression ans suicidal tendencies. Project K turned her life around to such an extent that she is now studying at Massey.

On to our 'croaky' guest in the guise of Sir Graeme Dingle Botox produces beautiful larynges.{Had to Google the correct plural of larynx - Ed!}. He started by thanking the Club for its unwavering support over the past 8 years and reported on the latest initiative in Rotorua which is going great guns. Many of the most important things in his life have been taught to him by a woman and he was told during a midwinter traverse of the Southern Alps ('it was a bit cold') that life is a cup to be filled rather than a measure to be drained. His mentor, one Bill Hall insisted that Graeme went to work for him and on his first morning asked him what he wanted to do and how much he wanted to be paid (Never happened to me – Ed).

He set out to establish the first alternative to prison for kids facing a custodial sentence. As there was little political backing that turned out to be a total failure. Undaunted, he took time out with what he anticipated to be a 40 day circumnavigation of the Arctic. Big miscalculation as it took 400 days but on his return, doubtless rejuvenated, he set up Project K which was an instant success. He then set out to recruit an army of iconic New Zealanders to back him (not many can boast at having pointed a finger at Sir Ed) and the rest, as they say, is history. Sir Graeme's dream of helping Kiwi kids through the Kiwi Can and Project K organisations is a testament to his dedication and his personal goal is now to have NZ recognized as being the best place in the world for kids. And so say all of us. An inspirational address of the highest order.
Sergeant Session
KEN lambasted Max for stealing his idea to highlight comparative birthdays of famous (or infamous) people versus Club members and then launched into a series of oldies but goodies:
'I bought some bird seed and asked the shopkeeper how long it took for the birds to germinate'
'My boss said “Have a good day” so I did. I went home'
PROSPECTIVE MEMBER NOMINATION
Les Geraghty has been nominated for membership of the Rotary Club of Tauranga Sunrise, and his nomination has been approved by the Board.

Les moved to Tauranga after many years of living and working in various parts of the country. He worked at BNZ from 1972 to 1983 in Hamilton, Morrinsville and Auckland, before moving on to Elders Real Estate in Cambridge where he worked from 1983 to 1987. He then became a Commercial Sales Manager at BP from 1987 to 2000, after which he worked for LJ Hooker in Cambridge, both with sales and as a co-director from 2000 to 2013. He is currently with Harcourts in Tauranga.

He and his wife Trish have a blended family of 2 daughters, a son in Melbourne and 2 grandchildren. They came to Tauranga from Cambridge, where Les held various committee positions with CCS Waikato, Cambridge Chamber of Commerce, Cambridge Club and St Peter’s School (PTA). He had long been involved in fund-raising events over his time with Jaycees and St Peter’s School. His son in Melbourne is an events manager, so it is something that runs in the family. Les is now looking to join a new team and make a difference in the community, and he hopes that by becoming a Rotarian, he will be able to do that, both in Tauranga and in the wider community.

Members now have the opportunity to lodge any objections, which must be made in writing, to the Director Membership and Club Service Committee within 7 days of the publication of this notice. You do not need to disclose the reason for your objection unless it is a business-related issue. Members are expected to act with the highest integrity for the good of the Club, rather than from self-interest. Please address correspondence to the Director at eric@happe.nz.
