Sustainability and the environment
Pumped Storage Hydropower is a way to store energy when the electricity grid is
producing more than needed, and generate when electricity is needed – like a huge battery! A couple of reservoirs at different heights is all that is needed – thus Lake Onslow is a great site. They don’t even need to have a large height difference, with a height of 500m can produce 3.5 megawatt hours of electricity. Note we are using about 1 MWh a month currently. Unlike Hydro, Pumped Hydro does not need river systems, is not as destructive to the environment and uses much less water than coal fired generation, as water can be reused. That said, they cost an enormous amount to build (initial estimate 16 billion) and not all sites are viable. But even if 1% of sites are exploited this would be enough to supply the world population!

Anja is from Child Health Integrated Response Pathway (CHIRPS), part of the DHB. She has over 20 years of experience in mental health, helping children and adolescents mental health. With the recent establishment of Health New Zealand around the country, Anja told us that children with mental health issues having mental healthcare access of only 3% per child, versus the Bay of Plenty have been able to increase their access to 6%. Referrals come from the schools and GP’s with kids that have various forms of ADHD, ASD/autism, trauma, alcohol foetal syndrome and so forth.
The challenges with mental health of children in NZ is access in DHB’s, with a current wait time for children in New Zealand of 27 months to be diagnosed, because they don't fit into the right box. Anja felt that by bringing all the departments together, rather than turning children away each time, then referring to a new department means that diagnoses and solutions are provided far quicker. Why is this important in Tauranga? Because of population growth of over 4% per annum and a young population of over 26% being younger than 20 years old. With Maori data in particular, is longer again with a 78 months wait! Anja mentioned Peter Hillary and his stories of climbing Everest, she learnt that the ‘gift of possibility provides change’. So with that she convinced her boss to start a trial on a small basis with just 20 children with a fully integrated service, with referrals from GP’s. The result has been that the wait times have dropped from 27 months to 11 months. In Anja’s view this is the only pathway to fully rectify and reunite families and children.
Michelle Crook gave us an update around the fact that Anja’s department has a new building approved. However, there was no funding for the fit-out of the building. Which required $5 million dollars. Fortunately, with the help of two very large private donors has enabled for this fit out to happen a year in advance with the opening of the new centre next weekend. She also talked about the fact that every city around the country has a Health Foundation, like an endowment, (a bit like Acorn Foundation). Michelle is looking to do the same for the Bay. The new building is at the bottom of 17th Avenue with the launch for CHIRP next weekend.
