Craig Nees was introduced by Dan Allen-Gordon.
In 2017 Craig and Jane established the BOP Youth Development Trust. They had looked at their own grandchildren and seen the support structures around wanted to do something for young people growing up without any such support, and them, and without positive role models. The Trust’s goal was and is to inspire youth to believe in themselves and achieve things they never thought possible.
Craig started by thanking the Club for its support.
The first programme established by the Trust was the Tauranga Boxing Academy, in 2018. The TBA now handles about 250 participants a week. At the outset it was all boys but now includes girls up to 12 years.
The Trust has also developed an employment programme called IBA (Imagine Believe Achieve) which runs for 12 months and comprises 13 weeks of training followed by pastoral care. The IBA program includes about 25% girls. There is a new program called AIGA for Pasifica, and a further new programme, not yet started, called Ki Tai which will be an outdoor programme based around boats. Course participants are fed breakfast and lunch, most of which is supplied by Good Neighbour.
Weekends are a problem – the courses provide a structure during the week but as one participant put it, there can be a shambles at home.
The current operation is based at 7 The Strand but will soon be moving to the ex FitCo premises opposite Tauranga Boys College in 12th Avenue.
Speaker thanks was from Pat.
Pat then summoned the Kaitiaki, and presented Kaitiaki awards to Craig and Jane Nees, to a round of applause.
Bob Sutton had intended to let us have time for a bit of chat, but there wasn’t enough time for that so he noted some events on this day in history: in 1967 the first global satellite broadcast occurred, and included a performance by the Beatles, and in 1995 a possible nuclear war was averted when Boris Yeltsin refused to push the button when advised to do so by his military – the US had launched a missile with a satellite and had told everyone but the Russians hadn’t told their radar operators so the launch was classified as a ballistic missile.
Parting Thought came from Graham Cornes quoting Bob Dylan: Some people go out in the rain and feel it on their skin, others go out in the rain and get wet.
