Ray Freeman is now inducted into the club. He was welcome to the club by Lynda and supported by Dan Allan.
Ray introduced himself and gave glimpse of his life and how he landed in Tauranga on 6th of April with his wife. He thanked all members for making him feel welcomed. He also expressed great pleasure to land here and getting involved in the community through Rotary club and Graeme Dingle foundation. He is looking forward to work in the new generation committee and help out where he can.
He was welcomed with a round of applause.
Guest introduction:
Ross Mosley is looking to be a member. He has lived in Tauranga for last 16 years. Him and his wife have 3 daughters and Ross wishes to join Rotary to help out in the local community, fellowship and meet new people. He has a finance background and currently looking for a new opening again in terms of work/business.

President informed the members about “huge thank you “from the Graeme Dingle foundation to the club for donating $20,000 in the last 12 months.
She also recalled reading an article about “a lady who can’t say no”. Turns out it is one of our esteemed member, Kathy Webb!!

Changeover (8th of July): Evening function, 1830 hours kickoff, $85 per person. Venue is the trinity Warf. We still need some people who can share their memorable moments at the Rotary. Something lighthearted.
Few of our members need to get in touch with Simon to clarify whether they are attending the changeover as it will enable the correct numbers being presented to the host venue. LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE

Glenys introduced Terry Cowper who is the chair of the RYDA programme and member of the Tauranga Te papa Club.
Speaker Session: Terry Cowper
Terry started off by expressing his pleasure to come and address the Sunrise club. He informed members that just like Tauranga Te papa club, Tauranga sunrise is also the founding member of Bay of Plenty RYDA collective. He then shed some light on RYDA’s origins in Bay of plenty in 2019.
RYDA is the leading and only accredited national road safety education program for youth in New Zealand. Workshop features highly engaging practical demonstrations, real life narratives, videos, quizzes, and interactive role play. The RYDA approach support social resilience and anticipating and managing risks. Students can also claim NCEA credits for day course attendance.
Demographics: It’s targeted at year 12 cohort and covers a extended areas of the region. We are aiming to have all the colleges to come and attend the course. Since the beginning we have put through over 3,000 year 12 cohort members. For every course we run down here, The Rotary collective pays $2,000 to the cost of running the course which costs about $8,000. We also help in other ways such road safety education gets access to grants and other funds in the region and through other areas. We also at times fund the cost of transport for the course participants. Members also help by providing human resource for running of the courses.
Long term plan: To have every year 12 student in the catchment area attend the workshop.
Challenges and highlights: biggest challenge is getting the colleges to commit the year 12 students to come along and fit it in the schedule. Another one is funding, but things are good now with $25,000 in the
Now we have 6 clubs participating in this programme and students give us very positive feedback about the courses.
Terry then explained the impact of the videos shown to members. Unfortunately, the sound was not on so Terry took it upon himself to narrate the stories. Stories were about taking the total death toll on our roads to Zero. In the video a person was asked what an acceptable road death toll in New Zealand was in a year. The person replies about 70. When he looked to his right, he saw 70 people walking towards him. They were his family members. He then turned around and said the acceptable toll number is Zero. Terry also informed members that RYDA was an Australia and came to New Zealand. It started in early 2000’s from Hamilton and then spread across the country.
It targets students before they get their driver’s license.
Graeme then added his views about his experience of RYDA. He praised the way course is structured and interactive. He highlighted that students are engaged and learn though an interactive experience. We can all learn a lot from the experience of helping in running of the course.
Chris thanked Terry and acknowledged his effort this morning to come in early and address the members. He presented Terry with a small gift as a taken of appreciation for his work and his presentation.
