Sustainability and the environment
FYI on sustainability: Goat island marine reserve. It is about 100 kms up from Auckland. It was the first marine reserve. It was set up to have undisturbed marine space to run experiments. Idea was floated in 1965 and scientist Bill Ballentine campaigned for 2 years to get it up and running. Reserve was then created in 1977. Now we have 43 other reserves that constitutes 10% of territorial seas. It has brought balance to the protected ecosystem. Even the fishermen like to fish around the boundaries of the protected areas. It also brings in tourist opportunities including group tourism. We have a long way to go in terms of marine conservation but marine reserves are a huge element in that space. Take your family there and carry some snorkels and enjoy.

Glenn Dougal introduced the speakers from Tauranga Art festival in a vibrant fashion. He told us that it’s a overdose of art and entertainment. So block your diaries and get ready for a joy ride.

Speaker session: With a Māori introduction Shane introduced himself, his speaker partner and his mahi. Growing up Shane spent his time in the blazing kiwi sun in a shambolic summer batch in Pukehina and a special treat on the way home used to be fish and chips in Tauranga north Warf. Other real encounter with Tauranga were as an artist where his work was presented in the festival under the leadership of Joe Bonds. This year Shane took the role to contribute towards making Tauranga arts festival. Shane thinks art exists to tell us we are not alone and to let us explore our imagination.
Tauranga art festival this year has been built to in response to where we are right now. With turbulent times this is year is the first festival since 2019. This year for the people of Tauranga there is something for everyone in the festival from toe tapping celebrations of the sixties to interactive space adventures.
All members then closed their eyes to melodious music by Tana Waipara. He last participated in the Tauranga art festival in 2013. His work especially “Deep roots” is literally gold dust and we will see him again this year.
Next show is the Mansfield in his own words it the brainchild of Charlotte Yates and is a story/poem told in a musical form. It’s a beautiful presentation and album is also available on Spotify.
Feedback also reflected that Tauranga people want folk music and hence there is music by Jenny Mitchell. Her music defies contemporary genre. All of her song are rich and fertile like the farming country she grew up in Gore. It makes you feel like everything is going to be ok. She is joining forces with her twin sister who shares a harmonic presence. Furthermore collaboration between Finn Andrews and Enzy Trio concert shifts the momentum and bring orchestral music and rock and roll together.
Next show is an presentation by Heckman theater company that creates experiential adventures for audiences. This show turned Shane into a big kid. Even though the show appears to be for the kids the show actually is fit for ages 8-80. The actual show is called mission control Mars and uses digital console in team environment to protect a space station which needs to be protected from a solar flare during the rocket launch.
The “edge of possibility” is the next item on the list and involves conversation with Dr. Alia who is a peak performance psychologist who negotiated her own release from the  idle east during a mission conducted by the UN. She is joined by Tusiata Avia, Gaylene Preston and Jarred Savage. To round everything they have also organised out of the box spoken experience with a reading of Nathan Joes and scenes from Yellow Peril.
On labor weekend we will also be treated with laughter by Kura Forrester, Abbey Howles and Justine Smith. It will include gauntlet of comedy with choices of time and artist. Wilson Dickson is also coming back is has been a fasting selling show in the festival with a new show. The Show will premiere here in Tauranga before it goes anywhere in the country.

We are also hosting free and community events such as visual arts program. The programme will be delivered by host of partners such as Toi Tauranga art Gallery, Toi Ohomai te pukenga, and heritage collection. The scope and impacts of these programs is vast and timeless.

Lastly we have combination of 4 works
  1. The savage coloniser show. It is about stories that we tell each other. It’s a clear eyed and furiously compassionate examination of race relations in New Zealand. It can be controversial and uncomfortable, however it is not only vital but also necessary.
  2. Mix  of stand up, spoken words, storytelling and autobiography by Organa O’Riley from mean mums or house bound. She tells tales about boobs, births and chins. It’s about body positivity. Morgana describes it as love letter to herself.
  3. Opu means word. This gives the stage to Oceania’s most electrifying writers. It has a heavy cast and offers oratory and storytelling at its finest.
  4. Katy Wolves Haka party incident which is a ground breaking piece of theatre and was programmed in 2021. This will be the first works to programme in this year’s festival
Please book the shows of your choosing in the next week or so you don’t miss out.
Shane finished off with quote from Patricia Grace who said “ The world is where we are”, Tauranga arts festival is all about that.

Chris thanked Nikki and Shane for their time and effort to present their work to the club. He recognised the importance of art and expressed how we look forward to bringing on laughter, fun and thought provoking shows.
