  Charles Heaphy earns Victoria Cross

Recommended for a Victoria Cross after rescuing a soldier under fire at Waiari, near Pirongia, Charles Heaphy was given the decoration in 1867. His was the only VC awarded to a member of New Zealand’s colonial forces, who were in theory not eligible for it.

Heaphy arrived in New Zealand in 1839 as a 19-year-old New Zealand Company draughtsman, and later became a surveyor and well-known artist. In 1846 he and Thomas Brunner made an epic trek from Nelson down the Buller River and the West Coast as far as Arahura – and back again.

Call to Order    Warren Banks With a Covid19 themed thanks for the Breakfast and noted that it was the smallest Rotary Breakfast attendance that he had ever seen and all to eat up large!

ENFORCEMENT fines for mobile phone use (from $80 to $120) speeding fines loss of driving license
He then talked about the thinking behind SSDR Senior drivers are more experienced not high in the Stats but more likely to be injured seriously they take longer to recover . The effects of aging varies individually eyesight, hearing and reaction times
A SSDR workshop is 4 hours and refreshers your knowledge and understanding on –The Practical side of driving. Car set up.   Give way rules.  Intersection rules and roundabouts.  Road marking and signs.  Searching and scanning skills.  Staying focused on driving.
A sobering note - Mt Maunganui has the highest collision rate in NZ- State Insurance
Question asked by   Warren did the course cover Bikes and Scooters. Ian replied yes that they are here to stay and skill for road shearing with them with them must be learnt.

RAFFLE was won by Brett after he spent 4mins finding his ticket No85

Sergeants Session – Warren Banks (sporting his Ferrari dress shirt) Nathan gave a great account of his life – from tough beginnings to a major achiever.  Well done mate!
This got me thinking about situations where the original intent does not eventuate
  • That it’s not Colin ironing his T shirt in a wok – no
  • Mass transport buses are massive but do not transport with only one driver on board
  • Buses cut down carbon from many private vehicles – per person they are shocking
  • Electric cars cutting hydro-carbons but powered by burning coal
  • We join a gym to get fit but use a remote to change channels rather than walk to the TV
  • Modify roads for efficiency – end up with both_____?  and fewer lanes
  • You should chose a science field where you can’t go wrong e.g. predicting earthquakes Now to be completely unaccountable become a Covid modeler where you predict 8,500 cases  - actually 309 not bad
Before Warren got censured, he changed to some info on names.
Dean means law and justice – Boris means snow/windblown hail – Chris means bearer of the anointed one Ardern means gravel valley Mary – beloved or rebellious
