                                              Today in History   1967

On his last day flying for Tourist Air Travel in March 1967, Fred Ladd illegally flew his Widgeon amphibian aircraft under the Auckland Harbour Bridge. He was discharged without conviction for this stunt.

An extrovert and a risk-taker, Ladd flew for the Royal New Zealand Air Force during the Second World War before becoming a household name during his years with Tourist Air Travel in Auckland in the 1950s and 1960s.

Visitors:   Cam Hill and Angela Rogers Good Neighbours & Guest Speakers

Welcome - Lynda opined “It’s been a great week with some cold mornings.” Spencer weather some would say.

Collections: Prepare yourself -The Salvation Army and Alzheimer’s are on the horizon. Neil will be collecting names at the next couple of meetings. (Just as we never experience a technology hitch without a call to the legendary Ken, so too, it is impossible to mention Alzheimer’s at a meeting without a memory joke)

K Valley – this is coming up on the 16thApril. Helpers needed. Let Michelle know if you can help.

Guest Speakers:  Cam Hill and Angela Rogers are from Good Neighbours. Cam tells us we are his favourite club, but someone suggested he might say that to all of them. Good Neighbour enables communities and people to access what they need. The focus on giving people a hand up instead of handout.

They have no end of civic minded initiatives. Almost put Rotary to shame. From food rescue, firewood supply, project teams and even the mysterious Care Junction. Sustainable backyards, accessible properties, wrap around care and injury time conclusions. They even have an Urban MAHI team.

Angela then told the inspiring narrative of how they had helped out a young woman and her 8-year-old son who had fallen on hard times. Living in a car that doesn’t go must be pretty hard. The generosity of Good Neighbour’s extensive connections was life changing for the two.

Injury Time Conclusions:
The primary causes of poverty in NZ are:
  • Bad Luck (backing the wrong horse)
  • Bad choices (going to the races)

Poverty comes in 4 flavours, a style to suit all types.
  • Poverty of Resources
  • Poverty of identity
  • Poverty of Stewardship
  • Poverty of Community

Some, such as the writer have been afflicted by all four, sometime simultaneously. Try to avoid that scenario.

Raffle: 88 – Kathy Webb as luck would have it.

Sergeant Session: Ray Scott with some good humour. Didn’t get it all but it included a couple of classics:

  • Never take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.
  • The first five days after the weekend are the hardest.
