– how it became a sanctuary after Auckland University alumni formed the Volunteer Spade
Brigade and planted 280,000 trees. The recently unemployed lighthouse keeper was co-opted to be the chief nurseryman. Tiri is located off the end of the Whangaparaoa Peninsular (Hibiscus Coast) so is readily accessible from Auckland. Worth a visit!
Satellite
Clubs –We received a bit of a run down on the Auckland phenomenon. Apparently, the idea is to embrace youngsters who like doing projects and getting them to come along to Rotary as a group. Rotary numbers are in slow decline, so getting young people from schools or universities doing projects, may give us the life blood we need!
Treasured Art – the Future: Kathy gave us a thorough run down of Treasured Art fund raiser to-date. It is essentially a six-month project that needs a bit of effort from the organisers. It has proved to be a rewarding fund raiser in the past, with $12 - $25 K being raised historically. Last year proved disappointing however, and we need to reconsider our options. One concern was the number of large events the club was attempting to run, with Crystal Palace and Behind Closed doors also requiring club resources.
After some group discussion the feedback was that we were still keen to continue Treasured Art, though perhaps biennially. The Yacht Club was a great venue but needed more promotion and maybe a Speaker and Dinner. Sponsors and buyers need to be spoilt!
Behind Closed Doors – Sat 4th November We need volunteers to help out at the properties. Two shifts 10-1pm & 1-4pm. Let Henry know if you can help our.
