Glenys noted this event is on the same weekend as the changeover, so she will be looking next week for interest to attend the Sunday session on July 4.
Shorts for Waipuna
Wayne Shadbolt reminded us Shorts for Waipuna is coming up so it your chance to show off your knobbly knees and white limbs to fellow club members at the meeting on the 18th June.
Guest Speaker
Our guest speaker Adrian Pohio explained he worked in an industry where the workers have been doing the same job for over 150 Million years. He was of course talking about the bees and his life as an apiarist.
Adrian gave some interesting facts:
One worker bee only lives for 6 weeks and produces ½ a teaspoon of honey.
If all the bees in the world died the human race would die out in 4 years.
One hive has one queen, 6000 workers, 250 drones, all working for free.
Editor's Note - OK so I got my calculator out and if all the workers were on the minimum of $20 per hour the weekly wage bill would be $125,000 per hive!
Adrian and his wife Lania sold their farm after 16 years and shortly after got offered a job in bee keeping.
In 2004 while on holiday in Europe they discovered honey being sold in Farmers markets, and brought the concept to NZ.
On their return in 2005 they started with 110 Hives, brought a trailer and in February 2016 they had produced 6 tons which they sold at the Hamilton markets.
The business expanded to more than 600 hives and the process of turning homey in to money was enhanced with an opportunity to export the product to France.
Question from the floor by non-other than Steve Dorrington for Adrian to do the bee dance was declined.
Sergeants Session
Pat was to present however due to Adrian’s interesting talk on Bees and many questions from the floor we ran out of time to have the sergeant’s session.
Parting Thought from Warren Banks
It’s what you get makes a living - It’s what you give make a life.
The meeting ended on a sweet note, Adrian and Lania’s offer members a tasting of their amazing honey.
