Notices & Announcements

Key Club Updates

  • Members were reminded about a community tree-planting event, with approximately 5,000 trees planned for planting and volunteers encouraged to attend.

  • The club is considering a fundraising quiz night to support environmental commitments, with several possible dates in late October and November discussed.

  • A volunteer is being sought to champion the future K Valley Cycle event after previous cancellations due to flooding.

  • Members were informed about a "March for Nature" event related to concerns over proposed conservation legislation changes.

  • An update was provided on public rescue equipment funding. A district grant application is under review, and if approved, installation could occur before Christmas. The local council has agreed to own and maintain the equipment.

  • Members were reminded about the upcoming "Friday 5's" event and encouraged to participate in key Rotary activities.

Guest Speaker: Kevin Atkinson

  • Kevin Atkinson, a foundation member and former president of the club, spoke about his background, career, and current involvement in New Zealand's guided hunting and heli-hunting tourism industry.

  • He described his upbringing, career in banking and housing, lifelong passion for hunting, and transition into guiding international hunting clients after retiring from Generation Homes.

  • His presentation focused on:

    • The economic value of New Zealand's trophy hunting industry.

    • Helicopter-assisted hunting in the Southern Alps and Fiordland.

    • Wildlife management and pest-control benefits.

    • International tourists and the significant spending they bring to New Zealand.

    • Personal experiences meeting people from around the world through the industry.

Additional Presentation

  • Rosalie shared her experience travelling to Brisbane for media coverage of a major Jim Henson exhibition, discussing interviews, behind-the-scenes exhibits, and the challenge of finding a unique story angle among many international media outlets.

Parting Thought from David McConnochie:

C.S. Lewis: “You can't go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.”

Next meeting:

25 September 2026 is our AGM.

Once again we will have a good chatty breakfast, reflecting on the great K Valley event and other interesting bits and pieces. The AGM is a time to reflect on all the things we did from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026. Also a time to think about our club going forward. We expect a high turnout, so don't miss out.

See you all there.
