Environment
Michelle thanked the Guess Whose Coming to Dinner participants for a successful evening.
The fourth cycle of K Valley bait lines are being laid.
The K Valley Bike event will be held in March at a date to be confirmed.
Drain Sock talks are being given to other Rotary Clubs.
A number of students attended an event at Summer Hill last Sunday.
Breakfast with the Gulls was held at Maketu.
A project involving a quiz trail in the K Valley using QR codes is being looked at.
International
Ross mentioned the raffle tickets for Glenys’s wonderful quilt.
He also talked of a possible water tank in Vanuatu.
Teams have been organized to collect Books for Vanuatu and Sally Morrison has kindly offered to store these for the Club. Collection will start Wednesday, see Ross.
Club Services
Rhonda reported that the much anticipated Santa meeting will be held on 16 December. No presents but bring a banknote for collection.
There will be the usual New Year meeting at The Raft, pay your own way.
A Gin event is also planned for the new year.
Community Services
Shiv reported that a good team has been assembled to work on Treasured Art.
Suggestions are sought for the Amazing Places project.
No requests for street appeal assistance have been received as yet.

Sergeant Viv Dykes
Viv recalled a series of events that beset her in 2009.
Her daughter Niki phoned to say she had been robbed whilst asleep on a bus in Costa Rica, and asking Mum to send money. Viv googles Western Union to send the money but her daughter has lost her passport and ID too so has to find someone to receive the funds. Niki responds with her tour guide’s detail and the money is sent. A few hours later Western Union phones to ensure the money is going to the right person. Viv is impressed.
Niki travels to next big city where there was a British Embassy and is issued with a Commonwealth Passport.
Next day husband Roy, who is in Thailand phones to say he has come off his motorbike there, is in a village hospital and needs to come home to better care. He has second and third degree burns, so it was an issue of survival. A fellow traveler was married to a doctor and was texting with information and advice. The insurance company initially didn’t want to fly him home, but he eventually got a doctor to sign a document saying they couldn’t look after him.
On arrival in NZ Roy goes to a GP who asked if had been riding with a man who was her husband? What a coincidence. Turns out her recommendation to get home was right and he had been prescribed the wrong drugs, and may not have survived.
ACC took over his care and were brilliant.
It was then Roy versus the insurance company as he had been wearing a T Shirt and shorts, which they said weren’t protective. But they didn’t have a definition of protective so ended up accepting the claim.
Speaker 25 November, Charles Cato
NZ’s Relationship with Tonga and Climate Change in the South Pacific
Charles Cato was raised in the Bay of Plenty, but went to Mt. Albert Grammar in Auckland where he became Dux. He attended Auckland University and became a Senior Scholar of the Law School (with Honours). Charles was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and studied further at Oxford University. He has been both defence counsel and prosecutor and has handled a number of high profile cases. Charles has now retired to Tauranga after serving as a Judge in the Supreme Court of Tonga.
