The board has selected The Armitage Hotel until the Tauranga Club is available.
When: We will hold our first breakfast there on 9th June.
Remember Venue change as of this Fridays meeting.
Cost: Please beware the cost moves from $20 per breakfast, to $28. Please can you adjust your AP for these new costs
- Total cost: 48 meetings @ $112 per month, plus $10 for Centurion Foundation for those that wish to donate to the fund.
We have not had a change in these costs for the last 4-5 years.
Ray Freeman is now inducted into the club. He was welcome to the club by Lynda and supported by Dan Allan.
Ray introduced himself and gave glimpse of his life and how he landed in Tauranga on 6
th of April with his wife. He thanked all members for making him feel welcomed. He also expressed great pleasure to land here and getting involved in the community through Rotary club and Graeme Dingle foundation. He is looking forward to work in the new generation committee and help out where he can.
He was welcomed with a round of applause.

Treasured Art committee has conducted a very successful event. The committee has decided to go out to White house restaurant on Friday 23rd. Any couples that want to join please express your interest.

Collections for Alzheimer’s Tauranga was successful as the team managed to collect $14,000 in total. members assisted in this drive. Thank to Adrian, Pat, Kat, Rhonda, Neil and Wayne for the support.

The fund raiser for Larissa’s acting stint in USA is through a movie night. “The unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry” Tickets are $25 Tuesday 13th June 1830 hours at United Cinema, Bayfair.

Speaker Session: Paul Higson, a fellow Rotarian from Otumoetai Rotary club and district chair of the Rotary youth foundation programme.
Paul talked to us about Rotary youth Exchange. The relevant topic covered was hosting a student in Tauranga. Youth exchange programme came to a halt in 2020 however it was recommenced partially in 2022 and most are starting in July 2023.
Rotary youth exchange is 1 year student exchange for students aged 16-18.
When students are on this programme and need sponsoring and hosting rotary club.
Hosting club must have a counsellor appointed (not professionally qualified), host families and a hosting school. The role of the club is vital part of exchange and cultural exchange is at the core of it.
There are also things like police vetting, enrolment in high school in the city. Counselor receives them at the airport and assist student in the city and host them for first few days, inroll them at the doctors, open a bank account.
During the exchange, club must pay $150 per month as monthly allowance to the student plus the cost of breakfast/meeting weekly. Students need to attend school, district conference, club meetings and join club activities. As host club we need to try and integrate them into the community work. We also encourage families to teach them about New Zealand.
Ideal number of host family is 4 families. Students become part of the family as opposed to being tourist or guests. There are also rules and boundaries in place to ensure safety and standards of the programme are upheld. Host families also need to be aware that there can be some issues as you would expect in day to day lives.
Non hosting members of the club can also offer some activities that students can become part of, such as dinners, local rugby games etc. If we are willing to host a student we might be hosting student from Brazil.
Dean thanked Paul for this time and effort while presenting about Rotary student exchange for the club.
Sargent session by
BarryHe talked about some of his experiences and funny stories. He started off with a story about a gentleman (name suppressed). The gentleman was racing to an open home where people were waiting for him and remembered that he left the key in the box on the BBQ and people had taken the BBQ away to their friends’ house.
This story is from Canada when Barry was travelling in caravan. They went to a property and knocked on the door. The listing agent said to Barry they are not answering the door to which Barry replied maybe they died. Not knowing lady was dead in the bed.
Another story where 15 people (including Barry) going through the house to view it. Nobody opened the door, however they had the key and so they all 2walked in to find out some people were still in bed, not sleeping.
Barry was selling a property up in the hill. He received a phone call from this buyer but Barry though it was a prank call, so he answered the call and said, “I am naked, what are you wearing?” The potential buyer replied, “Barry is that you?”
Another house he sold a few years ago for this older gentleman. While signing the agreement he asked if all was done. After figuring it wasn’t all done, he had a TIA. Barry had to ring the ambulance. When Barry came back to the office everyone asked, “did he sign it before he died?”
Another time Barry was on a merge, and it was his turn to be at the front of this young person so they both gunned it and Barry ended up at the front. 10 seconds later he got a text “Barry you merge like shit!”
Last but not the least, he pointed at his wife, Karen who was present at the club. He hoped that this story is a long one.
