Birthdays & Anniversaries –
Birthdays – Warren Banks - 30th July
Congratulations to Jim Rickards upon retiring
Guest Speaker – Warren Banks
Dave McDonald introduced Warren,
Warren gave a background as to how RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment) started at the Club with a conversation between Warren and John Mason (past member). It
all began with the Rotorua Rotary Sunrise Club and a camp down at Wiaouru and 50 kids. Warren thought why can’t he do this with our club, and so it all began.
This started by approaching the local Colleges to scout for the right type of kids. They wanted to target student at the level below the high achievers, a little bit shy, but could really shine if given some confidence. As these are outdoor courses, safety was always first. With the Military as the instructors of the camps, students were put through their paces, with Wake up Calls at 4.00am, and you had to be ready with clothes, woolly hat, shoes… The students would do high ropes, low ropes, native plant bush-craft, waterman ship, camping in the bush in Bivouacs. Anything left behind from the camp on Sunday, they had to go back in the bush and tidy up. At the end there was competition between the two teams of the group. They had to do things like a tug of war, set up army tents, race up the river. After these camps the change that appeared in the kids is remarkable and the feedback from the students was always very good.
Kathy Webb thanked Warren for stepping up and what amazing club members we have.
