BULLETIN 8th April 2022

TODAY in History

Julius Vogel was the dominant political figure of the 1870s, serving as colonial treasurer and premier on several occasions, and launching massive programmes of immigration and public works.

Born in London of Jewish–Dutch parentage, Vogel worked as a journalist and editor in Australia before settling in Dunedin in 1861. Elected to Parliament in 1863, he became Colonial Treasurer in William Fox’s government in 1869.

To revive a faltering economy, Vogel initiated a bold 10-year programme of public works and large-scale assisted immigration, funded by extensive borrowing on the London money market. The success of this policy depended on the rapid and cheap acquisition of Māori land by the Crown. Vogel and his supporters argued that Māori and settlers would be reconciled after the recent New Zealand Wars if Māori – and their land – were fully integrated into the European economy.

Guest Speaker Dr Heather Connelly

Heather was introduced by Nathan, who is the Director of Education and MBA program at Waikato University and member of numerous organizations.
Dr Connelly initially gave us an insight into the campus’s in the Waikato and the new partnership here in Tauranga along with the new student accommodation on Selwyn Street. Heather is excited about the new Vice Chancellor who has appointed a Dean of business Matt Bolger (one of Jim’s children) because of the real world experience he brings to the faculty. This has helped refresh the management school. Their vison is to be ‘Grounded in who we are, whilst being a global citizen’.

The Masters of Business School (MBA) at Waikato is currently ranked the no.1 in New Zealand

Heather also discussed the Waikato University’s place in the world, and the deep connections they have in community, with over 24,000 alumna, and their International Campus in Vietnam. They host the NZ Economic Forum every 2 years, bring together NZ Business leaders. Like any University their biggest challenge is recruitment to attract new students. To help with this, they have established a free leadership course for Year 13 students from BOP, Rotorua and Waikato colleges.

The Management School in celebrating 50 years in delivering education and the MBA School is in their 30th year. Heather went on to detail a number of the courses they offer and encouraged local businesses to work with the University to employ new graduates. She gave an example of what Zuru are doing with sponsorship, prizes, and guest speakers.

Barry F thanked Dr Connelly for her presentation, which has inspired him for future education.

Sergeant Session:
The sergeant session prepared us for the new and old traditions of Easter. Easter Eggs were originally a Pagan ceremony for the Fertility Goddess and the Easter Bunny’s came for the German Lutheran Church. The Aussie’s have changed out the Bunny for a Bilby, which a very cute Aussie marsupial. Norway has the Easter Chicken and Finland have the Easter Witches and go door to door collecting easter eggs!
