                     BULLETIN  23 September 2022                    Today History  1887

In February 1887 newspapers reported Ngāti Tūwharetoa’s proposal to ‘gift’ the Crown the mountaintops of Tongariro, Ngāuruhoe and Ruapehu as the basis for a national park. What the iwi actually intended was that they and the New Zealand government would take joint responsibility for protecting the sacred maunga.

The initiative reflected Ngāti Tūwharetoa’s ongoing concern for its sacred mountains.

Opportunities to get in the Red:
  • Rotary Auction- Ross Brown introduced our new Guest Auctioneer, Isacc Jakobs, although there appeared to be some confusion over whether Isacc had started his career in 1920, or 2019.
The man certainly had a twinkle in his eye and brought the room to life as he rattled through a collection of Home Stay lots, Manchester, Toy Trains and Footy Jerseys. There was prickle weed on offer, Chilean wine, Whiskey, Indian cooking classes, Tauranga Club membership and a much sought-after weekend at Ken Whites’ Matamata B&B. Lot 11 proved to be the highlight however, a Harbour Cruise and Grooming Advice, from our own hirsute Andy Cameron.
Kathy reported a princely sum of $3400 had been raised (with or without mistakes). There was even time for a Sergeant Session. Good Effort

Sergeant Session: Les Geraghty, told us that life is full of coincidences, just as the unclaimed raffle ticket draws read, 82,83 & 84. Sounds like someone forgot to shuffle the deck!

Parting Thought:
“Money will do you no good where you are going, so spend it while you can.”
