Announcements:
From Pat Taylor: There will be a brief International Committee meeting at the conclusion of the Club meeting on Friday 8 September.
Treasured Art: We will shortly be approaching local businesses for sponsorship for next year’s Treasured Art event. Please advise Pat Taylor on patandbernienz@gmail.co.nz of any contacts you may have within the business community who you feel may be worth approaching to sponsor this event. Remember that all proceeds will be directed to Kiwi Can so we are looking for businesses that have a community conscience.   Pat hopes to be inundated with suggestions.
Update on Vinna Sila.  You will recall that Vinna Sila has been brought to NZ through ROMAC (Rotary Overseas Medical Aid for Children) for life changing surgery.
There have been some delays as Vinna has contracted an infection although this has now been stabilised.
The surgeons are planning the bone graft operation for Sep 5 however this is dependent on her recovery from the infection.
If there are further delays it might be that we as a club will be asked to host Vinna and her mother Korina for up to a week to give her Hamilton host family a break. Glenys Parton will be keeping a close eye on developments and will get back to us if offers to host Vinna and her Mum will be required.

Foundation Mugs, or at least the contents, are to be handed in on 15 September.

Alzheimer's Collection on 30 September

Dean introduced the MP for Tauranga, Simon Bridges. Of course, an “apolitical” speech, but really, what do we expect, given the timing. No surprises, all is well in the land. Tauranga has good bones.
Except for some aspects that Simon mentioned. With strong local growth, we have another growth industry, the local gang pads, and Simon gave us some information many of us were ignorant about, their exact headquarter locations.
Big spend up on roads, more emphasis required on CBD facilities, science & innovation, then the dreaded M word, which must cause our city councillors to rest uneasy in their beds. Yes, Simon supports a museum.
Then, on to the attack on our sleepy Regional council, “cruising”. I could feel the bristles rising from a certain regional Council member who happened to be sitting beside me.
Then, a plea to our leading local businesses to offer more local community support, to flesh out the “good bones”.
On to questions: Why do we have two thirds of the country’s toll roads? Partly decisions, which he seemed to think were somewhat illogical, by his predecessors, and partly the local desire to pay a toll to get the eastern link more quickly. He seemed to be surprised by the next questioner, Mike Batchelor, who expressed support for the concept of road tolling. Apparently this support is unusual, but generally, he supports the concept in crowded places like Auckland.
It was a surprisingly frank and hard hitting speech, in the circumstances.
Thanks were given by Steve Read, who, tongue in cheek, wanted a hold put on a possible new passenger rail service from Auckland. Or just an embargo on a particular passenger?.
The raffle was won by Barry Vercoe, back from the States.
Sergeant was the ever droll Steve Dorrington. Topics covered included Jacindamania, ancient husbands becoming eligible for state subsidies, our sergeant’s avoidance of certain discussion topics, like commitment, how he narrowly avoided the ACT party list, and the question of how to solve the homelessness problem in Auckland: just leave the cars & busses parked in the new tunnel.
