BULLETIN  30 September 2022                    Today History

In the pre-dawn darkness, a house in Balclutha near the banks of the flooded Clutha River was struck by a huge tree that had been uprooted and swept intact into the current. Clinging onto the roof for dear life, Frederick Rehberg ‘coo-eed’ frantically for help.

By the time Rehberg and his housekeeper Ellen Kerr scrambled into a boat sent to their assistance by Messrs Porter, their temporary raft was within 20 minutes of being swept out to sea. The Porters ignored Kerr’s pleas that they risk their lives by going back for her cat.

A big thank you for Ross and Les for the Auction last week raising $3,400, which will go towards our Vanutau projects and Shelter Box.

Guest Speaker – Sas Pearce – From Waipuna Hospice

Neil introduced Sas Pearce who is the Director of Marketing from Waipuna Hospice

Sas was tossing up with which presentation to give the Club. YOLO (You only Live once) or Dying for Change. She chose Dying for change!

Sas talked about the breath of services that the Waipuna Hospice provide to the Bay Of Plenty community from patient services in the community, to respite care, through to grieving families or partners.

She then shared a video from the Hickson family and their story of on their mother’s bladder cancer journey. Hospice helped the family to understand the process they were going through, and opened their eyes as to what hospice did for them as a family. Waipuna is about people and helping make the journey less painful. You can also help the hospice in many ways, donations, time, visiting the hospice shops

Sas then went on to discuss how little people know about dying, and then showed members a video demystifying the process and the stages your body goes through. Which is a natural process that is usually very peaceful, as death is part of life.

Lastly, she then shared a clip from a palliative care nurse who also discussed dying from her patient care viewpoint. Sas thanked Rotary for their support and the support from the local community.

David Robinson thanked Sas for her presentation and all that Waipuna Hospice do in the community.

Thank you so much to the following members who so generously gave up their time to man the street appeal for the Alzheimer’s Foundation
Colin Beere
Neil Matson
Buddy Mikaere
Dave McDonald
Kat McMillan
Ray Scott.

We collected $495.80.
Not a bad result considering so few people carry cash.

Locally the Foundation raised just on $13500 from the appeal.
A very satisfying outcome.

Local Winner
Our very own Les is winner of the Playwrite 22 competition for Tauranga. He will be on his way to represent the city at the national. Well done

Sergeant Session:  Steve Dorrington
Steve started his sergeant session by fining Ron Fyth for the confusing around his travel dates to Rarotonga. I then lost track of Steve, something about fund raising with B&D, an auction for pre loved martial aids....Then there was something about a harbour cruise to Andy’s place and Kat’s signs for the local elections! Steven concluded with look what happened to Tenby Powell who is currently helping in the Ukraine war!
Jude is celebrating her birthday week, which he then shared a story about birthdays.
Lastly Steve’s quote of the day – I don’t mind dying so much, I just don’t want to be there!
