AGM for the year ended 30 June 2026

As president for that year, Shiv stepped up to the lectern and ran the rest of the meeting.

22 members were present so our quorum was easily met. Shiv reiterated his end of year report on the overall performance. This had been presented at the change--over meeting and also circulated. We stumbled through the financials and Rhonda spent some time explaining the purpose of the Sunrise Trust.

The Sunrise trust:

When the club was set up years ago, it was decided the club would run its meeting costs, and beside that would sit the Sunrise Trust which is the vehicle where all fundraising is done. Pat, David, Shiv and Dean oversee it as trustees. The trustees administer the trust on behalf of the club. There is approx. $80,000 in the trust, from years of fundraising, including a couple of real estate deals.

We’ve also received $15,000 that sits in capital in the trust from the wound up Gate Pa club – it is principally for the Tauranga Girls’ College – last year we didn’t allocate any as they didnt ask for it. While those funds are ours, we have ongoing responsibility to support Tauranga Girls’ College. This year there will be $700 for Trees for Survival as well as a $500 sponsorship amounting to about $1200 a year.

Election of officers:

President Stephen Dorrington

President elect Henry Kayser

Treasurer Graham Beswick

Secretary Kathy Webb

Other positions will be confirmed during the balance of the year.

General business

Friends of Rotary as a member category

Discussion: Should Friends of Rotary be ex-members as a matter of right, and partners/spouses of Rotary members, but not anyone else? Do we need some criteria around that? Should they pay something?

Suggestion - we discuss this with other local Rotary clubs and look at Rotary International’s Friends of Rotary rules.

It was decided that Sanjana be approved to be a Friend of Rotary and further discussions held to confirm how this will work.

Shiv closed the AGM at 7.57am

Sergeant at Arms – Michelle Beaton

Michelle Beaton spoke about the Friends of The Valley which Tauranga Sunrise have taken on the responsibility of running. Michelle provided information about Kopurererua Valley, from its history with an early pa, a staging post for the Battle of Pukehinahina (Gate Pa) in 1860s, a tsunami in the 1500s, early 20th Century attempts to turn the valley into farmland, on to the present where it is being restored as a wetland reserve. As a club we are helping to restore it, with tree planting, and have bait station managers who help with pest control.
