BULLETIN 18th February 2022

TODAY in History    18 February 1957    New Zealand's last execution

Walter Bolton, a 68-year-old Whanganui farmer, became the last person executed in New Zealand. Convicted for the murder of his wife, Beatrice, he was hanged at Mt Eden prison following a controversial trial.

Beatrice’s tea had contained traces of arsenic, and, over the best part of a year, she had consumed enough to kill her. Investigators found traces of arsenic in water on the Boltons’ farm and in Walter and one of his daughters. The defence argued that sheep dip had accidentally contaminated the farm’s water supply.

There was also a meeting with Mark Anderson from the Garden and Arts Festival re fundraising event, and Linda is going to draft up a proposal for them to consider.
Movie night for the Rheumatic Heart Disease fundraiser has unfortunately been cancelled.
The committee is also exploring a ‘Rotary Street Appeal’ and Pat is writing to the District Governor to further this appeal.
A grant application for $2,000 has been applied for, however this has been postponed till next year also.
A fundraiser for the Bay Conservation Alliance is also been proposed by the committee.

Director International Service - Lynda Burch
Lynda started by letting us know that the ‘Threads Across the Pacific” have applied for a $1,000 grant. The committee are also looking to send additional fabric for sowing material to go in the Kiwifruit container that is being shipped to Vanuatu. Lynda put a call-out for anyone who has spare fabric to donate to let her know.

Glenis is organizing the Romac raffle, and has meet with Dean Thompson.
Finally the committee plans to purchase a new Shelter Box by the end of the year. The Club will also organize a demonstration of what is in a Shelter Box. Steve Dorrington is believed to have one under his house!

Sergeant Session: Phil Mangos
This started with Phil’s quick tour of his magnificent garden bar. The concept started some time back with former Rotarian Peter Tinholt and a discussion about a part of Phil’s Garden that would make a great garden bar. With a lot of hard work, recycled Macrocarpa posts, Kwela decking and a lot of Steinlager bottles, a garden bar was built. Now affectionately known as the Steinlager Beer Garden Bar. Phil assures us that it is very well built with many cubic meters of concrete. All Rotarian’s are most welcome, and he note that the bar had hosted a wedding of 90 guests, so plenty of room.
