Rotary Tauranga Sunrise Bulletin 15^th October 2021

Chris waxed eloquently about the joys of Spring.

Pat introduced Immigration NZ whipping boy, Brendon Gardner, 

who pointed out that he started with the organization looking after migrant settlement, not processing visas.

NZ is a place where people would like to be and move here in the hope of a better life. There are several pathways – skills, partnership, investment, humanitarian, working holiday.

We accept about 1500 refugees a year.

In 2020/21 335,000 applications processed including 54,000 students. 1.3 million phone calls and emails annually.

Immigration NZ implements Government policy. 10% use a licensed adviser.

We lose people if they don’t feel welcome and settle. We also need to prevent exploitation, trafficking and modern-day slavery.

Kiwi/English communication can be confusing, for example the invitation to Bring a Plate.

Rhonda emphasized the urgency to provide certainty for skilled migrants, as many are leaving. Nathan commented on staff retention for the organization itself.

Buddy thanked Brendon and reflected on how things had changed since his ancestor parked his canoe by Bobby’s Fish and Chippery on the Tauranga foreshore.

 

Dave is still in hospital. He’s facing his issues with a positive attitude and the club sends our greetings and best wishes.

 

Organised by Les this will be on 16 November. A great movie entitled The Duke.

 

Les could do with some help getting a fence painted, so if you know of any hard working youth or even ourselves, contact Les.

 

Ken apologised for members who rely on his appearance always denoting the last Friday of the month. It doesn’t.

Erica Jackson  has been nominated by Buddy Mikaere and the has gone through the club process as per our  processes.

A bit about  Erica.

She is a company director in Tauranga and very interested in giving back but making it a better Community. She moved here around lockdown and work from home selling uniforms that she designs.

Hobbies are Paddle boarding, sailing her ketch and interior Design.

Phil impressed us with some facts and figures about the building in which we meet. Building started about 2000 and apartments were sold at an average price of $380,000. Paul Bowker was the developer which saw a 16-storey building erected on the site of the old Tauranga Club. Anecdotally, four boxes of Penthouse Magazines were found in the walls! A large number of piles were driven a massive 60 metres into the ground. Phil’s involvement was that he “fitted” the carpet because as he said, anyone can “lay.”

 

Phil concluded with this joke:

A little silver-haired lady calls her neighbour and says, “Please come over here and help me. I have a killer jigsaw puzzle and I can’t figure out how to get started.”

Her neighbour asks, “What is it supposed to be when it’s finished?”

The lady says, “According to the picture on the box, it’s a Rooster.”

The neighbour goes over to help and she shows him where the pieces are spread over the table.

He studies the pieces for a moment, looks at the box, and turns to her and says, “First of all, no matter what we do, we’re not going to be able to assemble these pieces into anything that resembles a rooster.”

He takes her hand and says, “Secondly, I want you to relax, Let’s have a nice cup of tea, and then, he said with a deep sigh . . .

“Let’s put all the cornflakes back in the box!”
