Shiv being an Engineer likes to understand what things mean. Sustainability means meeting our needs without compromising our ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

The UN sustainable development goals are setting out 17 goals:

Shiv introduced Aimee who he works with at Balance Agri, who has 30yr of PR experience across many industries. Her hardest Job was working for Tauranga City Council.

Aimee talk about a Trust transition for the Co-Operative, which has 17,000 shareholders. Balance started in the Bay to being Nationwide. They import Global supplies of Nutrients to enable these to be put back into the soil as NZ exports a lot of it nutrients offshore in the form of food. So farmers need to replace these nutrients. At their Mount plant they have 2 Phosphate plants and a Urea plant which has a high level of emissions in the form of CO2. So therefore they need a licence to operate so they look to manage their total footprint with innovation and on farm to reduce emissions. Their Kapuni plane produced 30% of the Urea required for NZ and the rest is imported. They add Blue diesel which reduce emissions by 25-50%. They are looking to remove 90% of the emissions by transitioning to electric. The first phase is to create green hydrogen, and they will look to make this by building a wind farm to create the electricity. This will help to substantially reduce NZ CO2 emissions. Balance view is to Decarbonise not deindustrialize.

 Lastly Amiee talked about the progress they are making to   improve the air quality in the mount, and Balance is the   most monitored in NZ, and because of that they have been   able to prove that around the plant that they have been   able to improve the air quality a lot, however the rest of   industry in the Mount has a bit of work to do.

Behind Closed Doors - Viv – Put a call out for this in the club that can bake Xmas cakes for the stall, and any crafts to sell.

Movie Night - John Carlson is coordinating a red carpet film premiere night on Thursday October 5, 2023 which starts at 5.45pm on the red carpet, followed by the BOP premier screening of the film 'Taking Back Our Beach'. Appeal to club to share on social media to get ticket sales up as about a third of the way there.

Steve put  his first call for out for volunteers for the Mount Multisport event on Sat 20^th January. Need Marshalls for the event and a great little fundraiser for the club.

 Rosalie gave us a hilarious story about the Rena and a side story of the rescue of Penguins and a wool shop in Napier. So the story goes that there was a Student marine biologist mother in Napier that wanted to help some way so decide to make sweaters for the small blue penguin and got the pattern to knit some from the wool shop in Napier. Any how it went viral and people all over the world started sowing sweaters and thousand were knitted. The funny thing is that the penguins can sweat! So where no good. The silver lining is they can now be sold with toy stuffed penguin’s and this help raise fund for the trust!
